How long an HVAC system lasts depends almost entirely on two factors: how it was installed on day one, and how well it is maintained.
When homeowners ask me how many years they can expect to get out of a new HVAC system, they usually expect a single number.
The reality is that there is no fixed expiration date. How long your system lasts depends almost entirely on two factors: how it was installed on day one, and how well it is maintained.
In fact, roughly 85% of a unit’s overall lifespan is determined by the quality of the initial installation.
Here is what those years actually look like in the field based on what we see every day:
5 to 10 Years: A poorly installed system. Not following proper evacuation techniques for system install, improper airflow, or improper copper brazing procedures will cause chronic strain on internal parts, leading to internal system blockages and premature compressor failure long before its time.
10 to 15 Years: A correctly installed system that gets ignored. Even a flawless installation will suffer from clogged coils and unchecked electrical components, causing it to run hotter and harder than it was engineered to.
18 to 22+ Years: A correctly installed system with regular maintenance. With proper airflow, clean coils, and a maintained electrical system, these units comfortably cross the 20-year mark, with some well-kept units running past 27 years.
At Erbe Air, our baseline goal for every HVAC system we install is to get it to that 18 to 22-year mark.
Protecting Your System for the Long Term
Getting two decades out of an HVAC unit isn't about luck. It's about basic physics and prevention.
When a system lacks routine care, minor issues like choked outdoor coils or clogged filters force the compressor to work under high head pressure. Running hotter than designed wears out the mechanical components at double the speed.
By choosing a professional installer from the start and maintaining the equipment twice a year—once in the spring for cooling, and once in the fall for heating—we catch those small pressure and airflow issues before they turn into early system failure.
Over 20 years, maintaining your current system is tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than replacing a unity every 5 to 10 years.
