What Real Heating Maintenance Looks Like

Gas furnace winter maintenance prevents sudden winter breakdowns

Preventative maintenance keeps your equipment running efficiently, prevents sudden winter breakdowns, and extends the actual lifespan of your system so you aren't forced to replace it years earlier than necessary.

Most homeowners assume an HVAC system either works or it doesn't.

In reality, modern heating systems rarely fail out of nowhere. They wear down slowly under stress, usually because basic maintenance was skipped or rushed.

When the big corporate outfits run a $49 "tune-up," they often send a salesman with a clipboard to glance at your unit and push a replacement. That’s not maintenance.

Real maintenance is preventative work. It keeps your equipment running efficiently, prevents sudden winter breakdowns, and extends the actual lifespan of your system so you aren't forced to replace it years earlier than necessary.

Depending on whether your home relies on a gas furnace or a heat pump, the mechanical needs are very different.

Our actual maintenance checklists are much more comprehensive, but here are a few key items we inspect:

Gas Furnaces

  • Gas Pressure Balancing: We adjust the pressure to keep the flame burning clean and steady, preventing fuel waste or overheating.

  • Safety Switch Cleaning: Dirty flame sensors and safety cut-offs will cause a furnace to shut down in the middle of a cold night. We scrub them clean.

  • Heat Exchanger Inspections: We check for hairline cracks that could allow dangerous carbon monoxide to leak into your living space.

  • Drain Lines & Leak Checks: We clear out condensed moisture drains to stop water damage and test all gas connections for leaks.

  • Motor Capacitors: We measure the electrical charge in your blower and inducer motor capacitors so a cheap part doesn't fail and burn out an expensive motor.

Heat Pumps

  • Refrigerant in Heating Mode: Heat pumps reverse their refrigerant cycle in winter. We test system pressures under load to ensure it moves heat efficiently.

  • Auxiliary Heat Strips: When the temperature drops below freezing, emergency backup heat turns on. We test these electrical coils to make sure you aren't left in the cold during a deep freeze.

  • Electrical Components & Blowers: We inspect all contacts, wiring, and motor capacitors to keep airflow consistent and electrical connections tight.

Already on Our Maintenance Plan?

You don't need to do a thing. We are working through the calendar now and will reach out directly via text or phone to schedule your fall/winter maintenance.

Not on a Plan Yet?

Don't wait until the first cold snap to find out your furnace has a bad capacitor, cracked heat exchanger, or a clogged drain line.

Contact us, and we’ll get your system thoroughly inspected, cleaned, and set up for the cold months ahead.
