The Truth About R-454B and the New Refrigerant Shift

Picture of old refrigerant R-410A and new refrigerant R-454B

R-410A is not banned and will continue to be produced and recycled for years to come. An R-410A HVAC system installed a few years ago can easily operate for its full 18 to 22-year lifespan with proper routine care.

I've spoken to several homeowners who had been contacted by a sales technician telling them that their existing R-410A air conditioner is "obsolete" or "dangerous" due to the industry-wide shift to new A2L refrigerants like R-454B and R-32. I want to assure you that this is not true.

What Is Changing

Starting in 2025 and moving into 2026, EPA regulations mandated that manufacturers transition from R-410A to newer A2L refrigerants. The goal of this shift is to lower the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of the chemicals used in air conditioning units.

The new A2L refrigerants (primarily R-454B and R-32) perform almost identically in terms of cooling efficiency. The main technical difference is that A2L refrigerants are classified as “mildly flammable.”

Addressing the “Flammable” Fear Factor

When people hear “flammable,” they picture a hazard inside their attic or crawlspace. The reality is much more mundane:

  • A2L Gas Is Extremely Hard to Ignite: It takes an open flame and a very high concentration of refrigerant in an enclosed space to ignite A2L gas.

  • Built-in Safety Measures: New A2L systems are engineered with internal leak sensors that automatically shut down the unit and turn on the blower fan to disperse the gas long before it could ever reach a dangerous concentration.

You do not need to worry about an A2L system sitting in your home. It is thoroughly engineered for safety.

Do You Need to Replace Your Working R-410A System?

Absolutely not!!!

This is where I see the most aggressive sales tactics happening right now. Some companies are telling homeowners that R-410A will be banned, or that you won’t be able to buy refrigerant if your system develops a leak.

Here are the facts:

  • R-410A Is Not Banned: The law restricts the manufacturing of new equipment using R-410A, not the operation or servicing of existing systems.

  • Refrigerant Supplies Remain Available: R-410A will continue to be produced and recycled for years to come to service existing equipment.

  • No Need to Rush a Replacement: An R-410A system installed a few years ago can easily operate for its full 18 to 22-year design life with proper routine care.

If your current R-410A system is cooling well, keeping humidity low, and running reliably, leave it alone. Have us perform standard preventative maintenance twice a year, keep your coils clean, and let the system do its job.

When the time does come to replace your unit down the road due to age or major component failure, we will install and appropriately sized, factory-specified A2L system with all the correct safety controls wired properly.

If you have questions about your current unit’s refrigerant or want an honest evaluation of your HVAC system, contact us to schedule an appointment.
